Wellington Lake has been on our list of go-to spots for a while and for good reason! We often miss the beach living in the mountains and Wellington has one of the best sandy “beaches” nearby. We love to bring a pop-up tent, cooler, and hang out with a group of friends for the day. The lake is wonderful for kayaking or paddle boarding and worth bringing your fishing rod too.
It’s a bit of a slog to get there (you’re on a dirt road for what feels like forever) but you’re rewarded with solitude when you get there. It’s a popular camping spot as well, but campers are typically posted up on the opposite side of the lake as they have their own beach on that side. The best day-use beaches are to the left looking at the lake from the check-in lodge. They are a bit more private and tucked away than the main day use beach.
Wellington Lake is privately owned so they require you to buy a day pass to hang. I highly recommend getting one in advance because they do sell out on warm summer days.
DRIVE-UP TIPS
Buy a day pass in advance HERE. Walk-in day passes are extremely limited. Once you get to Wellington Lake, you’ll have to check-in at the ranger lodge to grab your day use pass.
Go early. If you want to snag one of the best beaches, you’ll want to get there before 10am on the weekend. It will be chilly in the am no matter the time of year, so bring layers!
Bring sand toys! Bring your buckets and shovels. The kids will have a blast pretending they are at the beach.
Weather can be unpredictable here. For whatever reason, the weather at Wellington Lake can be unpredictable and rain moves in quickly. A good thing to be prepared for!
No cell service. If you’re waiting on an important call, this is not the place to go as there is little to no cell service once you’re there.
Floating docks. During peak summer months, you can rent floating docks in advance (see picture below); this is a great idea if you are taking a bunch of kids out to Wellington Lake.

Love to play in the sand!

You can rent these mats for the day

Big beaches to play on

One of our favorite places to paddleboard
Gorgeous in fall too!
