I’m constantly on the hunt for alpine lakes my kids can get to because (1) I’m a freak about alpine lakes, and (2) alpine lakes always offer so much in terms of activities and wonder for kids as they usually come with wildflowers, streams, and if you’re lucky waterfalls as well!
The Blue Lakes are tucked up behind Breckenridge and a great spot to spend a half-day. There are two lakes to explore - the upper lake is at the top of a rather steep but short trail, though be forewarned the upper lake is actually a drinking water reservoir so it’s a bit industrial with the equipment and fencing set up around it. We still made the trek up there to give the kids some incline practice.
The real magic is at the lower lake where the waterfall is. To start the trail, you’ll have to traverse a stream which in our case during the fall was simple rock hopping. I’ve read this can get a bit deeper and harder to cross during late spring and early summer so always check recent AllTrails reports before setting off! Along the trail to the waterfall, there are several “social trails” down to the water’s edge if you want to adventure off trail a bit. The waterfall is gorgeous at the end.
TRAIL TIPS
High altitude. The trail starts at over 11,000 ft so if coming from a lower elevation, just ensure everyone you are with is acclimated to altitude. Breckenridge is notorious for hitting people with altitude sickness!
Crowds(?) I’ve heard crowds can be an issue here due to the beauty, relatively short hike, and being super close to Breckenridge - parking is limited so something to keep in mind in terms of day and time you come.
Could be windy. We had a very windy experience up here so as always pack layers!
Creek Crossing. As mentioned, there is a stream crossing that is more or less required to reach the waterfall so waterproof shoes or extra socks/shoes is a good idea!
Bring an SUV if you can. The road to the trailhead isn’t paved and while I think a low clearance sedan would probably be OK, I’d recommend an SUV to get up there if you have one.
