Silver Dollar Lake is an ideal hike if you want to push your kids a touch outside their comfort zones. This hike has a little bit of everything - forested sections, rock/scrambly parts easy enough for kids to do, and some of the best high alpine views in the area. In July/August, the wildflowers are next-level.
My favorite part about this hike is that there are actually three alpine lakes to see with Silver Dollar being the last. The most challenging part of this hike for kids (or anyone really!) is the last ¼ mile pitch up to Silver Dollar Lake, as it’s pretty much straight up. But if you have the time and patience to take it slow with breaks then your family can totally do it. The great part is that the 2nd alpine lake just at the bottom of this steep pitch is breathtaking so if that’s all your squad has in the tank that day, this is the perfect place to hang for a break before heading home.
TRAIL TIPS
Limited Parking. Parking is limited, and there isn’t any overflow so it's good to keep in mind and factor into what day / time you go.
Bugs! This hike has those not-so-lovely alpine bushes that attract bugs so definitely bring bug spray.
Creek Crossings. There is a creek crossing or two (and sometimes lots of mud) so packing extra socks is a plus.
Bring those hats. Because you’ll be above tree line for a good portion of the hike, start early as there is minimal shade starting above ⅓ of the way up your ascent. (You also want to beat the summer afternoon storms).

Views for dayyyssss

Naylor Lake - first lake of 3

Snow crossings in mid July

Unnamed 2nd lake (I think!) - prettiest IMHO

WILDFLOWERS! This is from the steep pitch at the end.
