While this park is always bustling (it’s a major hotspot for rock climbers!) there are a few relatively quiet spots that are perfect for an awesome family outing.
When I bring the kiddos here, we usually do a few things in the park. First, we park close to the Fowler Trailhead and do a woods wander on this flat, easy trail. It has great views of the canyon and the kids love watching the climbers do their thing on the rocky outcroppings. The trail itself is quite varied which keeps them entertained (lots of rocks to climb and educational placards along the way). You can do the entire 4 miles but there’s no “end” destination so recommend you just go for as long as your kids want.
Once they’ve maxed out on the hiking, we hop back in the car and make the short drive further into the park to the riverside picnic spots by the Visitor’s Center. There are several sites to choose from (all first come, first serve) or you can hop from site to site if it’s not busy. Many of the sites have great little beaches too.
Or just skip the hike all together, bring a cooler, and camp out by the river for the day!
TRAIL TIPS
Bring a picnic! There are awesome riverside picnic spots down by the Visitor’s Center. These sites are first-come-first-serve.
Be mindful of when you go. The park fills up on the weekend and they turn cars away or do a 1-in-1-out situation. Go early or late afternoon if headed there on the weekend, especially on a warm day. You can always call the ranger’s office to see how things are looking that day. Park website HERE.
