Button Rock is a great “choose your own adventure” type of trail as you can go as little or as far as you’d like and still have fun. The first section of the trail runs along a small dam; if you’re feeling adventurous, there’s a little trail that will take you down to the area below the dam waterfall. You’ll typically see rock climbers here in warmer months.

The rest of the trail up to the reservoir is mostly a wide trail along a river; during the summer and fall when the water is lower, there are several beaches to camp out on. A few times, we haven’t made it more than a mile in before stopping, fishing, and splashing around on one of the beaches (it’s close enough to the car too where you can bring chairs and sand toys).

If your kiddos have the energy, the Ralph Price reservoir at the end of this hike is gorgeous and well worth the trek. You’ll even see some waterfalls along your route.

TRAIL TIPS

  • Bring a change of clothes for littles. If you’re going to be playing in the water, bring an extra set of clothes or at least socks.

  • Water runs high + fast in the late spring/early summer. If going during “shoulder season”, just be prepared that the water levels might be high making splashing around tough.

  • Hike vs. Wander. The hike to the reservoir is pretty for sure, but it’s going to feel long, especially with little kids as the majority of the hike is along a wide gravel path.

MAKE A DAY OF IT

  • Check out Lyons. Lyons is a funky little town to check out after your adventure if you’re feeling up for. We love:

    • Lavern M Johnson Park. This community park has a playground, fields, and a creek running through it. Perfect picnic stop.

    • Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ. Kid-friendly BBQ place right in the heart of town.
