This is my go-to spot close-by if I want to get my kids out in nature but it doesn’t seem like they have it in the tank to hike any sort of distance. Pine Valley Ranch Park is a perfect place for wandering with no agenda in mind. It’s a bit of a hidden gem too as it’s never very crowded.

There is a small pond in the middle of the park where you can fish if that’s your thing as well as a river that runs through with a variety of sandy banks to play on. There is a beautiful picnic area right on the river near the parking lot that would be great for a large group if you have family in town. There is a trailhead here that leads to a number of family friendly trails, but to be honest, we rarely make it past the main trailhead area because it’s so fun! If you need a low-key adventure day with your littles, definitely consider Pine Valley Ranch.

TRAIL TIPS

  • Great for babies. There is plenty of shade, picnic tables, and flat land here so good for babies.

  • Flush toilets! I love the large bathroom with actual toilets - such a rarity and a big bonus if you, like me, have a kid that’s scared of pit toilets.

  • Water, water everywhere! Pack extra clothes/socks or water shoes for the littles if they’ll be in the water; if you aren’t planning on hiking far and have a few sand toys, they’ll be great here!
